Why turn-based RPGs still feel best on a phone

Every year someone ports a huge action RPG to phones, and every year I go back to turn-based ones. There's a reason. Phones are interruption machines — messages, calls, a stop coming up — and turn-based combat forgives all of that.

Playing Embersteel Saga recently reminded me how well the format fits. I could think through a fight, get pulled away for five minutes, and return to exactly the same decision. No panicked deaths because I looked up.

The trick good ones pull off is depth without twitch. Positioning, skill order, resource management — all of that lives in your head, not your reflexes. That's ideal for a small screen and a wobbling bus.

If you've bounced off mobile RPGs before because they felt like reflex tests, try a turn-based one next. It's a completely different, calmer experience.
